Back in the early 90s I watched my uncle make four passes by the driveway of the ranch property I was living at. I should probably clarify that by 'passes' I mean he was using the two-lane paved rural highway to try and get his gyrocopter in the air. After the fourth try, and with no traffic yet to appear by some miracle, we figured he was going to give up.
Nope.
On the fifth pass Uncle George finally got the rotational speed he needed and left the ground right before he reached the nearest power lines that crossed over the road at 25-30ft. Somehow he managed to duck beneath them, his wheels kissed the pavement, and then he soared upward like he was being pulled on a bungee cord. And just then a car came over the hill towards us.
Uncle George drank too much, had multiple DUIs with time spent for parole violations, had totaled multiple vehicles while drunk, and loved gyrocopters.
Yeah, he died in his sleep. Bastard.
